Growing up on {{W|Long Island}}, my parents have always made mention that Long Island should become its own state. Even after moving to Florida, I still have the Long Islander deep in my heart. Today, Long Island is in the limelight, as statehood continues to be pushed and pushed by the people and local government. Will this be our time to shine? Will we be able to become the 51st state of these United States?

Greetings from the future 51st state!

I am a Long Islander and proud of it. Growing up in the small hamlet of Holbrook in Suffolk County, my parents and family has always talked about Long Island becoming a state. After my parents splitting up, moving to Florida, and the recent death of my father, I can see see the growing need for statehood within my own life.

Statehood has been a big question for Long Islanders, practically since the formation of the United States. Can this truly be the time of our rising? Okay, enough with the sappy intro. This is my interpretation of Long Island statehood, including my opinions and ideas to make this new state great.

History

The island of Long Island has had a unique history in comparison with its neighbors. Once divided between Dutch colonists (centered in New Amsterdam) and English colonists (centered in New Haven), the entire island would become British after the successful occupation of New Netherland, in which the island was part of the British Province of New York. Long Island was dominantly loyalist during the Revolutionary War, but remained united with the State of New York upon independence. The island has since been close with New York City, even being in the claim as part of Mayor Fernando Wood's proposed "Free City of Tri-Insula" (part of the hype of the Civil War).

Prior to the incorporation of Kings County and western Queens County into a "Greater City of New York," there was a failed push for statehood. This statehood hype would remain dormant until the modern day, as the island has become highly populated and becoming a cash cow for the rest of the state.
